Cayman Islands

Has anyone ever spent any amount of time in the Cayman Islands?

What are your thoughts about spending 3-4 years there?

With the war drum beating maybe this is a good time to go down to CI instead of Europe/Middle East....

I am going to become a Canadian but will live somewhere away from North America for 3-4 years.

Islands are usually dependent on extensive imports from the outside world for necessities, which can be cut off WTSHTF. Also, you'll be a foreigner there. They also rely on tourism industry, which is poor business to be WTSHTF

I've been looking at the islands too. Some random thoughts so far:

I think I'm preferring other less touristy places than Cayman, ones that have more local agriculture, espacially fruits and veggies. That might be critical in SHTF if imporrts are shut off, and less likely to be local Zombies prowling for your food supply.

Fresh water is a big issue, Not certain but I think the Caymans are in a dry region, they don't get the seaonal heavy rains for a big cistern.

Even a Cat 2 hurricane could ruin more than your day.

A couple of the other islands offer a better path to citizenship, which might also be valuable in SHTF.

yeah what they said. No experience specifically with Cayman but I'll share what I saw on some other islands in the area. A group of former british islands out that way. Very close by in fact with a cigar shaped country between them and cayman. On these islands there is no income tax. There are very high food or consumption taxes to raise money. Food stocks got very thin between food barges. Sometimes they were delayed a week or more. Because the waters around those islands are so shallow only small tonnage vessels can get in. Having the tourist liners coming to your island means larger freight vessels can also get in.

Everyone lives on island time which means things get done only when they are good and ready. Smaller islands have clicky communities, everyone knows everyone elses business type of thing.

upsides are that the waters a beautiful and clean, fishing is great, diving is amazing. Cayman is fairly low sitting on the hurricane alley. The people are mostly happy. They like to party a lot. Not much else to do. If you were monied up then you could do quite nicely on islands like these for a couple years. I wouldn't want to get stuck out there if there was a problem with food or transport off the island. I would want to have an out like an ocean going craft of some sort.

How certain are you that you'll be allowed to enter the country by that time?

If you are serious about emigrating then go where you want to be and STAY THERE. Nova Scotia is rural and insular, and after you're there for 20 years you'll still be referred to as "the new guy" (a New England Yankee trait, too). Move in, quietly get to know your neghbors, integrate yourself into community life, and as time passes you'll almost be a local. So if TSHTF, you have a smaller chance of being singled out or offered up to whatever. But you have to be a part of the culture, and a few years in the Caymans will not benefit you on that score.

I have a friend thats from Cayman. He tells me if you have mega-bucks youll be OK. Or if your name is Eubanks youll be OK. Otherwise it good for tourist only. The people are very cliquish there and dont trust outsiders.

The first question to ask, is WHY do you want to leave the US? What do you hope to gain by leaving? Are you sure you won't just be exchanging one set of problems for another?

The grass ain't always greener on the other side, but good luck with whatever decision you ultimately make.
